Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. - 1 Samuel 16:7
6' 2", tall dark and handsome. Every woman's dream and every man's envy. He was the king of Israel, conquerer of thousands, commander of the armies of Israel. A decisive, inventive, confident leader ... and an utter failure. How could a man, who on the outside, seemed to be so blessed, but on the inside be so cursed?
Saul was the first king of Israel, and he was a man who was king of his own heart. A man who's purpose revolved around increasing the greatness of himself. The only problem for Saul was that when troubles became to great for his power, he became powerless.
If you're anything like me, you can relate to Saul. I wrestle with the difficulties of this life in my own power, only to feel overwhelmed and inadequate. You may not have an invading army coming to conquer your kingdom but you may have a checklist that tends to rule not just over your day but over your joy.
So what is the answer if our own giftedness isn't enough?
The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Matthew 13:44
Notice what Jesus says in the parable ... a man sells everything to buy a field. Why would this man surrender everything? Because he sees not just the field but the buried, hidden treasure worth millions! He knows what he will lose will far surpass all he will gain.
This is the counter intuitiveness of the kingdom of God: We find freedom of the soul through surrender of the heart.
When you surrender the throne of our heart to the true treasure ... king Jesus, you find peace and joy in him. Its in this everyday battle for the throne of your life that you must remember Jesus is the true joy. Jesus is the true prize. Jesus is the true treasure of the soul when given the kingdom of the heart. Thats why Jesus says:
Where your treasure is there your heart will be also. - Matthew 6:21
What's the treasure of your heart right now? Where do you want it to be?
What in your life needs to be given over to the rule of Jesus?
Why do you think you have such trouble giving ownership and rule over to Jesus?
